Galveston ArtWalk This Weekend
During your vacation, be sure to visit downtown Galveston this Saturday, April 24th for ArtWalk, a partnership with local art galleries. It’s a special free tour of galleries, studios, and other art-related businesses, and the focus is on local art! You can go to the Galveston Art Center website for more information and maps of the tour. It’s exciting to see things opening up again as we return to “normal” on the island. Have fun this week and stay safe!
The Trolleys Return to Galveston!
After a more than10 year hiatus, the Galveston Island Trolleys are returning to shuttle visitors around the island, specifically between the Seawall and the Strand. The trolley system was halted after storm damage from Hurricane Ike in 2008, and there have been plans in place to get the system running again. Right now, they are holding test runs, but the trolleys should be fully operational by this summer. Be on the lookout!
Annual Oleander Festival This Weekend
In case you weren’t aware, Galveston is known for its amazing oleanders! The International Oleander Association is holding their annual Oleander Festival this Saturday, April 24th - after missing last year because of COVID. We are excited to see the oleanders and the festival’s return! The festival will be held at the Betty Head Oleander Garden Park on Sealy Street. Go to the IOA website for more info.
Babe’s Beach Webcam
Our vacation condo rentals are right across Seawall Boulevard from Babe’s Beach, one of the more popular beaches on Galveston. The beach is one of the newer beaches and the sand has been replenished recently. The beach was named after A.R. “Babe” Schwartz, who served in the Texas House & Senate and is famous for his efforts to promote and protect public beaches on the Gulf Coast. You can see what’s going on down at Babe’s Beach (or just check out the weather) by clicking over to the webcam at Galveston.com.
Pay a Visit to Moody Gardens
If you have kids with you during your vacation to Galveston (and even if you don’t), then Moody Gardens should definitely be on your to do list! It is certainly one of the more unique features on the island, as there are three huge pyramids that dominate the landscape and house an aquarium, a rainforest, and a science museum/exhibit. Not only that, there’s a water park, beach, zip lines, golf course, and the largest 3D movie screen in Texas. In other words, there is something fun for every member of the family - pretty much any time of the year. Our vacation rental condos are less than 2 miles away from Moody Gardens, so it is very convenient and easy to get to. Make sure you pay them a visit while you’re in Galveston!
1877 Tall Ship Elissa
The 1877 Tall Ship Elissa is one of the must-see landmarks in Galveston while you are here. This is a full description from the Galveston History website:
“The Galveston Historical Foundation brought ELISSA, an 1877 square-rigged iron barque, from a scrapyard in Piraeus Harbor, Greece to Galveston to begin restoration work in 1978. By 1982, GHF staff and volunteers completed restoration and transformed this rare, historic vessel into a floating museum that would actively sail. Today, the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA is one of only three ships of her kind in the world to still actively sail and welcomes over 40,000 visitors annually. She also serves as the Official Tall Ship of Texas, a National Historic Landmark, and a symbol of the Gulf Coast’s historic beginnings as a seaport and active waterfront. The 1877 ELISSA welcomes visitors at the Galveston Historic Seaport. Experience Galveston’s maritime history daily.”
